How to replace the engine cushion?

The engine cushion is an important part; it is essentially a support to support the powertrain. A quality cushion extends the service life of the engine, so the condition of this part should be monitored. And to do this, you need to know how to replace the engine cushion if it has failed. Especially since it can be done with your own hands. Of course, much depends on the car brand. One thing is an engine cushion VAZ, and quite another is a foreign car. When do I need to change the cushions?

Quality supports contribute to the fact that the engine serves for a long time. But they are also notable for long service life – with careful attitude to the car. Over time, even the highest quality ones wear out, and that it is time to replace them, tell such signs as:

Abnormal noises while driving,
Vibration under the hood, especially when the load increases,
external changes – for example, there are cracks, or parts made of rubber are separating from the metal base.

You can check if it’s time to change the engine cushion by doing a test. But you will need a helper to do this. The driver opens the hood and starts the engine. Then the car is put on the handbrake and tried to move slightly forward or backward. Assistant at the same time watching whether the engine fluctuates. If a roll of the engine is observed, it means that the supports are out of order.

How do I remove the motor cushion and replace it with a new one?

If a malfunction has been identified, the part will have to be replaced. It is important to understand exactly which pillow is out of order, because the rear pillow must be removed from the bottom of the car, while the others are accessible from above.

In order to make the replacement, you also need to pick up tools, including a jack. As a spacer, a wooden bar and a board of appropriate thickness are used.

The scheme of actions for replacement will be as follows:

The car is installed evenly, without the slightest warping. For safety stops put under its rear wheels.
If there is such an element as engine protection, it is removed. It is also necessary to dismantle the alternator belt. To do this, you should unscrew the fastening part – the bolt of the tensioner. This is done using a wrench.
The jack is placed so that you can lift the engine. Next, everything depends on what supports should be removed. For example, if it is about the front supports, it is placed under the motor and spacers are used to raise the unit, thereby reducing the load on the pads. If another support is dismantled, the jack is placed in the gearbox area.
To dismantle the support unscrew the nut and two bolts fixing it to the bracket, and those fasteners, by means of which the bracket is fixed to the longitudinal member.

This scheme describes the replacement of almost all supports, except for the rear. It is dismantled in almost the same way, only the bolts fixing it to the gearbox are unscrewed.

After removing the old part, you can install the new one. The work is carried out in reverse order. Often several cushions are replaced at once. This is a time-consuming process, you will have to act one by one. For different engines there is a different number of supports, on the sixteen-valve there are five – in addition to the lower and upper, front and rear, there are also right and left cushions.

After the replacement is complete, it is necessary to start the engine and check its operation. If everything was done correctly, and the cushions are securely fixed, you will not feel any vibration.
